Give Grassy Narrows mercury survivors proper care and treatment

The people of Grassy Narrows need our help! Tell the Ontario and Canadian governments to build a treatment centre in Grassy Narrows for survivors of mercury poisoning. A large portion of the Grassy Narrows and White Dog First Nations communities suffer from the effects of mercury poisoning. In the 1960s, the government of Ontario allowed 10 tonnes of mercury to be dumped into the river that the Anishnaabe people of Grassy Narrows rely on for their food and employment .

Last month, Ontario finally committed to cleaning up the river, but on November 11, the Toronto Star broke the shocking news that the government of Ontario has been hiding evidence for decades that the grounds of the infamous Dryden pulp mill site upstream of Grassy Narrows are still soaked with mercury and are almost certainly a continuing source of contamination for the river – something the government has always denied.
The survivors of mercury poisoning have been waiting for decades for proper treatment and compensation for the terrible impacts this has had on their health and their community. They need a state of the art treatment centre to alleviate the symptoms affecting them, such as loss of motor function, tingling and weakness in their limbs, difficulty walking, speaking and swallowing, and the terrible toll that mercury poisoning has had on the development of their children.

Help the survivors by adding your voice to the call on the federal and provincial governments to make an immediate, binding commitment to build a state of the art Mercury Home and Treatment Centre in Grassy Narrows First Nation. Travelling out of their community to seek treatment not only puts an added burden on the victims, but there are no adequate facilities or expert medical staff anywhere in the province that are capable of giving the treatment required.

Nothing can right the wrongs committed against the people of Grassy Narrows, but we can take this critical step to help alleviate their suffering by establishing a Mercury Home and Treatment Centre for them. Please send a letter to the federal and provincial ministers responsible for First Nations relations and health care.
