This area offers to the west of Four Bay Lake exclusive, remote access to several different lakes that can be accessed through a combination of short boat trips and portage trails, offering tremendous fishing opportunities for walleyes and northern that can match any fly - in lake in Northwestern Ontario. Many of these lakes are fished only a few days each year, guaranteeing an authentic fishery which will formulate a true memorable day trip. These lakes are equipped with small boats, outboard motors and a supply of mixed gasoline is provided here at the main camp ready to take into the portage lakes.
\r\nLocated here at the camp is a fish cleaning station equipped with running water and a processing table for the daily catch.
\r\nA tip to consider:
\r\nAfter a productive day of fishing on the lower Sturgeon River or in one of the portage lakes, returning to camp with the stringer of fish to be cleaned and consumed that evening is a part of your fishing experience. A suggestion, to make it easier when transversing the portages is not to carry the stringer of fish across. Please, bring along a small insulated Igloo cooler and two frozen gel paks as this will lighten your load for the return trip. Also, cleaning your fish when first caught is an excellent method to retain freshess, even on the hottest of days and the quality of the meat will actually taste much better, than when the fish are kept on a stringer for the whole day. In addition, one little favour we ask of you, please no cleaning of fish on boat seats and leave all fish remains on the shore. The eagles, ravens and bears extend their thank you for an easy meal.

\r\nSturgeon River Outfitters has obtained Restricted License Issuing Status effective for the commencement of the 2008 operating season. There are two types of fishing licenses available at the office:

\r\n\r\n\r\nThis lake is one of our main fishing lakes which has all three species of fish that are native to this area which are: walleye, northern pike, and lake trout. Four Bay is a deep lake that has an average depth of 35 feet with maximum depths of 120 feet, and as it is a bulge of the Sturgeon River system, it is a natural flowage enabling it to have a constant cooling affect, even in the hot periods of summer. The fish tend to bite better even in the mid summer and the meat is much firmer than the shallow lakes to the north. Also, Four Bay Lake has two unique factors, the very north bay is a fish sanctuary and is closed until June 14, this provides additional protection for the females walleyes to have ample time to spawn. The bottom structure consists of sand, gravel and several rock reefs, which provide feeding areas and protection for all types of marine life which is very beneficial to the fishery.
\r\nThe very first portage that will require navigating to continue into the Sturgeon River is the very first falls below Four Bay Lake, called White Falls. This is a fairly short portage which is only a 0.25 mile. On the west side of the White Falls, we have one floating dock and four boats equipped with outboard motors. White Falls itself is a fine generator of oxygen providing feed and the fish are right at the base of the rapids.
\r\nThe Sturgeon River has a series of rapids, White Falls is one of them, that provide a natural flowage supplying plenty of oxygen and a rich feed structure that is conducive to producing plentiful stocks of walleye and trophy pike. This river system has great spawning areas consisting of gravel and sand beds mixed in with boulders which are a perfect habitat for breeding females. Also, this waterway has many features to it, it is one of the most scenic lakes in Northwestern Ontario with many bays and fantastic rock formations that make for great natural photo opportunities, in addition it has tremendous bottom rock formations to harbor schools of fish. The center of Dizzy Lake which is the main portion of this water body has a strong natural flowage producing under water currents which are very beneficial to fish habitat. The quiet bays of Dizzy Lake offer tremendous opportunities to catch trophy northern pike. Upon catching your shore lunch, you may want to check out our shore lunch cookout location at Bicycle Island.
\r\nFor the more adventurous angler, the waterways below the second falls provide an excellent angling opportunity for trophy northern and walleye. The second falls portage is fairly level, although the distance is a little longer than the White Falls portage at approximately 0.5 miles. Also, we provide a boat and motor at this site.
\r\nFrom the north arm of Dizzy Lake, there is a portage trail which is a third of a mile through flat terrain to reach Davies Lake. Davies Lake is a favorite of all our current guests because it is a piece of paradise offering seclusion, and tranquility along with fine fishing for both trophy northern and walleye. This lake has an average depth of approximately 25 feet, with a structure of rock boulders and in the northern areas of the lake there are some large expanses of sand and gravel on the bottom. In addition, Davies Lake has excellent shore lunch facilities located on an island in the central part of the lake for your enjoyment. This lake also has boats and motors.
\r\nThis small lake is connected by portage trail from Davies lake. For the most adventurous guests, this lake offers tremendous fishing for walleyes and northerns. Also, there are boats and motors at this location.

The natural setting of the above lakes and river system, along with conservation measures of protecting and encouraging the growth of the Sturgeon River fishery system, have proven wonders with number of walleyes, northern pike and even lake trout increasing with each passing year. Whether you come for the fun of it or the big trophies the quantity and quality of fish will be here now and they will remain in the future.

An interesting fact to consider on the topic of reproduction of walleye: For each pound, 20,000 eggs are produced from the breeder female walleye. Example: 5 lb X20,000=100,000 fingerling walleyes, only 1/10 of 1%, which is 100 walleye survive to become an adult 16 inch walleye.
\r\nSturgeon River Outfitters in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has formulated a conservation approach to enhance and protect the fisheries for the Sturgeon River System which includes: Four Bay Lake, Dizzy Lake, Davies Lake, F-Lake and Grup Lake. This program was implemented as of January 1, 2007, and it is a modified catch and release or catch and consume program.
\r\nTHE DANGERS OF SLIP BOBBER USE.
\r\nThis article was written by Dr. Tom Peters, Valued Client.
\r\nHello fellow Sturgeon River Outfitters/Lodge fisherman. My name is Dr. Tom Peters. Iam an animal scientist and live in Oregon, Illinois. I have had the fortunate luck of fishing at this resort and the Sturgeon River system for well over 20 years now. I have seen many changes in the area and when I first started fishing this beautiful area, it had been "freshly burned." As you can see around the upper lakes (4-bays, 3-bay, Sanctuary) there are only a few groups of trees that survived the fire. Luckily, the camp survived and is here to welcome us back year after year. I look so forward to our group coming up each year for our annual father/son fishing trip! As most fisherman, I contemplate and review the Cabela''s catalogs with much angst each year as my wife questions " you don''t need any more fishing gear." In fact, she is most often right, for my fishing week while at Sturgeon River Outfitters, as a handful of 1/8 oz. jigs, will generally suffice to catch all the fish one nedds for shore lunch. James and Jean are great new additions to the camp and I welcome them and their plans for a lifelong fishing destination. They have asked me to comment on "Why to NOT use slip bobbers" while fishing at their resort.
\r\nNow, before some of you get mad and question why I would suggest this, I need to clarify a few things. First off, I am an animal scientist, not a fisheries biologist. I have fished for my approximate 50 years of life, since I could remember. I was raised on a farm in Minnesota and fishing was a way of life for our family from the "get go." I (probably like many of you) really enjoy walleye fishing. I have had this "addiction for chasing walleyes" in my blood forever. I own a cottage in northern Wisconsin, located on a good Muskie lake..., but my son and I still fish for walleye''s every time we are in the boat. I am blessed to be able to walleye fish in many different places across North America. Generally, between Canada, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Illinois and Wisconsin. I am lucky enogh to be on the water over 60 days per year fishing for walleyes. The point is that I love to fish walleyes, have my whole life and am lucky enough to have a son and friends whom like to do the same! Like most fisherman, I am a student of the science and art of fishing and also like most fisherman, I think I am pretty good at fishing. Enough bragging!
\r\nWhat I did want to discuss with fellow guests at this lodge and on the Sturgeon River chain here in Ontario is that I hope we can fish this place for many more decades and not have to worry about it being "fished out." Most of us fellow fisherman drive all the way up here, to participate in excellent fishing...because in the United States most lakes are either over fished, over speared (Minocqua, Wisconsin) or over-polluted to support large walleye populations. The group of friends that I fish with are dedicated to the proposition that we will catch and release all of our fish except immediate shore lunches. I am hopeful that my son Luke and my friends will eventually "spread my ashes" up by the sanctuary, when I pass. Obviously, some of my best memories have occured on this system.
\r\nIf you read the MNR information, it takes approximately 10 years for a walleye to grow to 15 to 16 inches in these waters. Some estimates are that a 30 inch walleye may be 20-25 years old, or older! These are cold waters and growth curves are slow for fish. I think the Sturgeon River system (I mostly fish river systems for walleye) is unique in that it has such a diverse array of structure that it can be "relatively easy" or conversely "almost impossible" to find and catch fish (often on back to back days). Most fisherman that traverse these waters, must know good basics about structure, weather patterns, walleye yearly cycles and time of season...to experience success on a daily basis. Likewise, with this river system, there are some places to fish every day that allow almost certain success.
\r\nNow, it''s not my place to tell you what to do with a 30 inch walleye. Many people fish a lifetime for crack at one. Most fisherman will never even see a 30 inch walleye. If you do catch one, you must be prepared on what you are going to do...you must move swiftly to unhook a fish of this size and not stress it to death. I would try to encourage you to take a picture of any walleye over 18 inches and let it go. I especially would encourage you to release a 25 plus inch walleye. If you want a mount...they make spectacular fiberglass replicas that will last forever. To date, I have caught 14 walleye''s -30 inches or larger and have released them all (not all from Canada)! I am proud of this. Better yet, my son Luke has caught (and released) 3...back-to-back-to-back, 30 plus inch walleyes (when he was 12 years old).
\r\nSo, you ask, what is the point of this article? Well, we (our group) strictly use jigs when we fish. We do this for several reasons. First of all, because I am convinced there is nothing more exciting in life to have a good light rod rigged with light line and a small jig...and have a walleye hit it. However, I will tell you that we also ONLY jig for walleyes because of the 10''s of thousands of walleyes I have caught in my life, I think that only 5 or 6 have died upon release. Those walleye mortalities were most certainly related to how long the fish was in the boat or because the walleye had been badly "mauled" from a Northern Pike on the way to the boat. Conversely, I see almost on a daily basis in most lakes, an extreme high mortality (death loss) of walleyes that have been caught (and released) with slip bobbers. You see, many of the walleye''s that are caught on slip bobbers ingest the hook resulting in harm to gills or vital organs. Most people think that they can release these deep hooked fish and "the fish will recover." Unfortunately, many of these fish perish. I see this in a northern Wisconsin lake often. Sure, slip bobbers are an effective technique to catch walleyes, but on this system you can surely catch plenty of walleyes with jigs. I can relate some of the horrible stories we have witnessed while fishing in northern Wisconsin, North Dakota and Minnesota and observing countless dead walleyes floating on the water...because they had been hooked with slip bobbers. therefore, when Jame and Jean came to us and asked us for our support in not using slop bobbers on the system...we gladly agreed. Easy for us, since we don''t use slip bobbers. We feel the same way about "Lindy rigs," but I am sure the mortality is slightly less than when fishing with slip bobbers.
\r\nWhen the fish is hooked with multiple barbed hooks, the "turn-over" time to release the fish is often lengthened, often resulting in higher mortality rates. However, I feel they are justified in requesting the elimination of slip bobber fishing. Even with the use of a "CIRCLE HOOK" rigged to a slip bobber, there is a high percentage of mortality. It is common knowledge that when the "SLOT LIMIT" went into efect on Mille Lac''s Lake in Minnesota, there were "rafts" of dead walleyes on the shores from the slip bobber caught walleyes that were released because their size fell within the "SLOT."
\r\nAs you can see, it is imperative that for walleye on this delicate system to remain in great supply forever, we as the fisherman need to be the "protectors" of our fishery. If we respect these fish and harvest only the ones that we use for shore lunch, then perhaps with some luck the fishery will be productive and sound for many more generations of fisherman. I fully support the owners os Sturgeon River Outfitters in recommending discontinued use of slip bobbes. Hope to see you on the water.

Reducing the handling time and therefore the stress on a fish is very important in determining the chance of survival of a released fish. Stress and physical damage are the biggest killers of released fish, so caution must be exercised. A fish that is going to be released should be played as little as possible. If you are going to release a fish immediately, don’t handle it at all. Simply remove the hook with a pair of pliers while the fish is still in the water. Deeply swallowed hooks should be cut off, rather than removed. The damage done trying to remove the hook could be fatal, but left alone the hook will often corrode and work free.
\r\nIf you must handle a fish, use a wet wool mitt. Never grab a fish by the eyes or gills; instead grasp the fish behind the gills and lift it out of the water. Be careful not to squeeze its belly. After removing the hook, gently return the fish to the water head first. You can support larger fish from underneath with one hand, while using the other hand to hold the tail.
\r\nDo not keep the fish out of water any longer than necessary. The chance or survival will be increased by minimizing the time out of water. Many fish will swim away without being revived, but if necessary; work some water through its gills. Be careful not to pull back abruptly on the fish or push it through the water too quickly, otherwise you may do more damage than good.
\r\nNever toss fish back into the water as you would your boat anchor or a rock. You may have the satisfaction of releasing a fish without realizing that the return may damage it.
\r\n\r\n
Consider taking measurements, several photos, and releasing the fish gently. Graphite reproductions are easier to care for than skin mounts, they look just as good, and you will win the praise of friends. They will appreciate the fact you let the fish go for someone else to catch and to keep its superior genes in the gene pool. That way you and others can catch the same fish again later – only it will be bigger for years to come.

As we operate the camp very similar to a fly-in, where boats and motors are included in the package. For instance, Four Bay Lake itself is the body of water we are situated on, it is a small lake and the fishing is good in it, although a larger percentage of the fishing action and the gentle pull to explore is below White Falls.There is a short portage trail, and it is the only method to bypass the White Falls, the water itself is not navigable through the falls. The adjoining waters west of White Falls are accessible only by the boats supplied at the White Falls Dock.

With the area offering an abundance of logging roads to the north and east of the lodging facilities, in the autumn guests can enjoy the best of both worlds. These road corridors provide easy access to hunt grouse, which are plentiful within this type of forest habitat, especially in new growth areas. Most areas can be traversed with two wheel drive vehicles, although four wheel ATVs make it more fun and adventurous.

Presently, we operate a small bear hunt on a recently acquired two hundred and fifty kilometre Bear Management Area. This tract of wilderness, was not hunted for the 2007 season and Sturgeon River Outfitters commenced bear hunts in this area for September 2008.
\r\nThe new addition for the 2010 Bear Hunt season is the installation of a 120 square foot walk-in cooler on site. This cooler, with its new 3.0 H.P., Copeland Compressor will preserve your harvested bear, to yield an excellent quality organic meat and first class preservation of the fur pelt.

INFORMATION UPON ENTERING BORDER: FIREARMS - HUNTING BOWS
\r\nAll firearms must be declared upon arrival at the US-Canadian Border. No hand guns are allowed to be transported across the border into Canada for hunting purposes. Hunting Bows are not classified under the Firearms Act, although this type of weapon requires declaration also at the US-Canadian Border. There is one type of crossbow not allowed to be transported into Canada, which is the design, held and discharged with one hand. Length of this prohibited crossbow is less than 500mm from tip to tip.
\r\nPertaining to rifles and shotguns, it is a requirement under the Canadian Firearms Act, that each individual hunter complete a Non-Resident Declaration Form 909. Should the individual hunter have more than three eligible firearms, a Non-Resident Declaration Form 910 will need to be completed. Form 910 is a continuation of Form 909. Forms can be obtained from the Canadian Firearms Center by calling: 1 800-731-4000 or from their website at: www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca. Forms can also be obtained from Customs at any border crossing. In the event you download these forms or have them sent to you in the mail from the Canadian Firearms Center, forms may be completed before arriving at the border crossing, although it is a requirement the form be signed by the individual hunter, within the presence of the Customs Officer. There is a fee of $25.00 Cnd. funds for the processing of each Non-Resident Declaration Form 909, No additional fees for form 910, should it be required.

Our former clientele were all U.S. citizens and many have become friends, it was a real pleasure to serve them. The experiences I have encountered range from twelve years in the forestry sector, where I also managed two small outpost cabins on remote lakes within the forestry company''s private lands serving corporate executives. In addition, I was employed for eight years as a water plant operator within the Sault Ste Marie district, and prior to this, I had six years of active service within the Coast Guard as the Lighthouse Keeper on Caribou Island, Lake Superior. \r\n | \r\n|

On the Internet, security is always a concern. For that reason, you are encouraged to subscribe to the Joomla! Security Announcements for the latest information on new Joomla! releases, emailed to you automatically.
If this is one of your first Web sites, security considerations may seem complicated and intimidating. There are three simple steps that go a long way towards securing a Web site: (1) regular backups; (2) prompt updates to the latest Joomla! release; and (3) a good Web host. There are many other important security considerations that you can learn about by reading the Joomla! Security Checklist.
If you believe your Web site was attacked, or you think you have discovered a security issue in Joomla!, please do not post it in the Joomla! forums. Publishing this information could put other Web sites at risk. Instead, report possible security vulnerabilities to the Joomla! Security Task Force.
Learning Joomla!
A good place to start learning Joomla! is the "Absolute Beginner''s Guide to Joomla!." There, you will find a Quick Start to Joomla! guide and video, amongst many other tutorials. The Joomla! Community Magazine also has articles for new learners and experienced users, alike. A great place to look for answers is the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). If you are stuck on a particular screen in the Administrator (which is where you are now), try clicking the Help toolbar button to get assistance specific to that page.
