On September 29-30, 2017, concerned residents from across Michigan, Ontario and Indigenous communities will gather for the Water Is Life: Strengthening the Great Lakes Commons summit in Flint, Michigan to organize and challenge Nestlé’s bottled water takings and Great Lakes threats and to promote human rights and water sovereignty. For Earth and Water Walk 2017 is the accumulation of work that began in 2003 when respected Elder Josephine Mandamin began walking around Lake Superior to raise awareness and pray for the Water. Since then she has conducted 13 Water Walks across the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River and many other major rivers. She has inspired a generation of women to care for the Water.
*On April 20th, 2017 she began on Spirit Mountain in Duluth, Minnesota, USA and over the course of 97 days she completed the walk on the St. Lawrence Seaway in Matane, Quebec. In total they travelled 5,144 kilometres (3,197 miles) and over 6,394,000 footsteps for the Water.* Continue reading
